thanks guys! ive been sort of pioneering my own technique so unfortunately, i dont have a difinitive answer for you ben. the main form was done with a "sloppy" brush, smudge tool and lots of the artistic filters. i drew the sketch in tons of layers and adjusted curves, color balance, etc.. on each layer individually until i thought it looked neat.
