I basically used a gradient layer on top:
1. paint a textured ground + a white base where you want the strongest light
2. select what you want to color (bigger is better)
3. make a new (blank) layer (keep the selection)
4. throw a gradient on it (half transparent!) (sometimes youll need a few small ones instead of a big one)
5. put the gradient layer on overlay
6. merge

It takes a bit of practice, but this technique gets great results
