dont be afraid to paint over edges, like the pig and the bg, and then clean them up. Like, alt-eyedropper the edge color of the pig, paint right over the edge, and the alt-eyedropper the color of the bg, and fix it with that. you can get a much smoother look that way.
also, try and go for a more defined light source and really think about the colors you're choosing, like you're a 3d renderer. I saw a really great tutorial a while ago, let me find that link.
that's basically the best, most direct overview of art and color i've ever found. the illustrations are really great. I wish i had a printer so I could save it forever, in case the internet blows up or something.
