Hey, I like this very much, it is like a book illustration. This is kind of the style I am working in, often I prefer ink over Wacom. You need some good music to get you through the long process of inking. What kind of pen did you use,? doesn't look like a nib pen. It is definately better with the background., it ads more confusion.
It makes sense to add a bit more white around the bat, but on the other hand, it is a clever thing that you hid the bat in the illustration, and mention him in the text, so then the reader has to look where he is hiding. I have been batwatching with and without a sonar tracking device, and they are pretty hard to see in the dark. So, you have a good legal reason to hide him. I like the bat the best the way he is now.
One other thing with you hide and seek bat is that the text and the picture work together. First I looked at the drawing, (I didn't open your first one) then I looked at the text and read there was a bat. Then I look at the drawing again to see where the bat is. This is a very good piece of how image and words can work together. I want to give you a ten for that. Remember that your text is also a part of your composition.
For background, try not to think of them as backgrounds that are separate from the characters. But rather that the character or subjects are part of an environment. Another thing is to think of backgrounds (or other inanimate things) as characters. I hope you understand what you understand what I mean.
Cyclops, is this a saying in a different language, or are you coining a phrase?
" I hope you understand what you understand what I mean" I don't understand! :)
no. that was not a saying in another language Andrew. Sometimes just my words get mixed up. There is a more scientific explaination how and why that happens but I'd like to quote Winnie the Pooh here instead: I have good spelling, just the words end up in the wrong place, and it's wobbly.
Thank you Jes, I think it has to do with perception, like Strabo said, I have a good eye.
Hey, many thanks Cyclops, great advice man. I really like working in ink, I used a Micron 03 pen for this drawing, and an 05 for the thicker lines.
And I definitely understand what I understnad you mean;)
As far as the bat being hidden in the drawing, I think that was one of those happy accidents. It worked out well, I am getting to more of a point where the text is becoming more and more central, I guess that is the difference between cartooning and illustating. Anyway I really appreciate your commentary, thanks everybody:)
