Sketch/ digital painting I started earlier today, thinking of making a video of the progress. for class.
The idea is she's being dunked into water ( I like these action snap shots ) - so these Mafia guys dump her into the water and she's drowning cuz these goons know nothing about how long a red head can hold her breath..as if.
She's bound with chains and the sea water will be a murky turquoise dark blue with specks of dirt and air bubbles floating to the top ( and interacting with the depth of field stuff! I LOVE DOF and PERSPECTIVE! )
Some elements in the background are ideas and the colour crosses are to give me a sense of what the colours might look like in conjunction with the shapes and setting...blah blah blah...as always, a light source, single, double - whatever, this one will only have 1 master light source with a diffuse light spread through the water and some background element lighting. ( Ships and skyline )
So far, the most interesting thing is, how the hell am I going to do the bubbles..refference, I need refference to study!!! ;D Bubbles!
Imagine, painting we hair and we skin!! I love a challenge!
looks anatomically very good, face and body. She has quite broad shoulders, and I'm not sure about the chinline, I like the freckles. Why did you draw her shoulders so stiff, what happened to her? I checked myself in the mirror and in a relaxed position my shoulders are quite lower. You have her wrapped up in lots of rope that's keeping here in this position or something.
Boobs seem good to me, they should be halfway the biceps. I can't make out if you are putting the boobs right at the waterline, I would put it a little space between the waterline and the bottomline of the boobs. Umm, if you want you can make a few rough sketches to see what I mean, decide which one to go with.
Yeah, bubbles are a funny thing to experiment with, big ones small one, clustered, spread. With bubbles you can create quite some of the mood, try some patterns. I'm looking forward to see what you come up with. The waterline and the floating hair tell that she is held upside down in the water rather than being thrown into it.
I don't know what you are planning with the light decrease, your mental image is prolly quite diffrent from mine. To me it looks like her face will end up in the dark, with the amount of detail you put into it, it looks like you want to show at least something of her face. But making her face disappear is a mysterious thing to do, like she is already swallowed up and dead. You are not able to see if she has opened her eyes or not. I like that version very much for a right comic page, you build up more anticipaton. And you get a better comeback if she would escape after you flip the page.
I could a few more things to nag about, but don't want to go too much into details.
Looks good, an eight because of the shoulders.
Hmmm, I wanted to wrap her in chain with a padlock somewhere to emphasize tension..it's supposed to wrap around her shoulder area but I don't want to cover up too much of her..maybe I should redraw her more relaxed and have the chain ends come down from the top so it looks like only her arms are wrapped because I don't want her boobies covered in chains. :D ( She's a red headed prostitute that works for the Corleone family, she's being drowned because she wouldn't sleep with the Don's son. ) (( I think, upside down, gravity makes your shoulders bulge out, so I was thinking I should make her tense her shoulders...like when you lean backwards off the side of a bed...but I didn't figure in water she might not need to be tense because of the density of water. it looks also like I drew her one arm a bit too big...damn. ))
Yeah, she's being drowned, this snap shot is after they dunked her the first few times, so she's just drifting there now.. =/ it looks so sad...
I'll fix all these little problems in the painting process, The light decrease, well, I should have elaborated on that note, you see, I have this image that the water will, because of defuse lighting, be strongly lit higher up, but lose it's ambient illuminated quality after only a short distance in water, so when I say, light decreases, i meant = the water itself gets darker with depth, so you will see her almost entirely, her hair might only have a few glancing highlights. to emphasize the color.
I like the idea that's she's swallowing up death.. very dramatic. =)
Thanks for your ideas and comments Cyclops!
You do sketch simular to me. I should show you some of my quik figure drawing sketchs. I can particularly tell with the circles you used to get the breast. I always had people in class asking me "why do you have those circles there? Or whats that line for?" I'm like god damn it let me just get the sketch done then crtisize. A lot of people in my class can just draw a form straight out from contour. I personaly can not it is a buidling process.
People stress me out way to much when I draw though I hate being watched.
Just an other ramble sorry....
But I like it I can't wait to see it finished. I think at home I might have some bubble type references to send you from erotic pictures taken underwater. I will look when I get home. I am at work now
Wow, that's cool Jes, I wouldn't mind you showing me some of your work, It's strange how we all have something in common.. =)
I also get that from people, they ask me "Yeah Dude! why do you use lines and shapes here and there, why don't you just 'draw it' and quit playing around!"
Then I LOL at then and give them the 1000 yard stare..."tell me dude..do I look like a printer?, do you see a model in front of me to draw from?, wait..hold on, why don't YOU go draw something? eh?.." *silence*
It's a building process for me too, I 'feel' the form and play with it a bit while it's still rough, on my PC lately though, I've tried the solid contour once off perfect drawings and it's hard to be honest, but worth a try. =D
You shouldn't stress=out when people watch you draw..never think about them, only about the drawing at hand - otherwise you over-emphasize on perfection or try and draw what they want. - just go with your own gut.
