this is not my artwork, but I posted it to show what I was talking about in the comment on Rubbins sketch. Now Helix can comment on if it looks deserty enough or not (:
I hope Rubbin and you have an agreement that your allowed to edit his work...
The addition of shadows are nice, but it gives the image a feel of late afternoon not midday,
in the mid day, there is almost no shadow.
Very nice work on the shadows that pass over the sand near the craft, instead of using the sands colour you
could have used a darker shade of green, the sand waves look like their lit from another direction in the shade.
I see you use the sun as your refference for the light source direction, but, If you've seen any photo's of vast open places,
the suns glare might hang relatively low, but the illumination of the scene is still very high, so it's not always wise to use the
illuminating object, in this case the sun, as your bases for light and shadow dispersal.
the dunes in the background was right before, now it just looks green,
the way the air looks nearer to the ocean when viewed from behind smaller dunes on the beach on hot days.
for this type of setting, the character's tones are too mellow, there is no abruptness to the shadows you're trying to portray,
especially if you used the sun as a pointer for the shadows and the illumination, then the bushmen man standing there with his spear should be
most if not all in shadow becuase of the view-point and the angle of the camera (viewer)....
I hope you are alright with it that I took you sketch and changed it Rubbin,
I did it only to show what I was talking about.
Thanks for your comments Helix, I think this is what Rubbin was asking for in the beginning.
Hmm, now I have to look up some photo reference to get the idea of what you are talking about.
I do agree with you about the sky and the sand, that they were better before I messed with it.
Making a sketch is one thing, but changing is something else.
I don't mind at all. In fact this gets the advice accross very nicely. It already looks better than the oiginal.
I've been tempted to ask before for some paintover type advice, but I wasn't sure if Ben would be happy with me taking that type of liberty on the site. This is a daily sketch group after all, would you mind things like that Ben?
At first I was going for mid day lighting, but then the sky looked too bland and I added the sun. The sun does look to hang a little low in the sky, so I guess the composition (or lack of) is a bit confusing.
Helix, I'd be interested to see you interpretation in a paintover as well. If you have time of course, you can post a linkt to it or something. I'd appreciate it.
Cyclops - It's my pleasure, I love elaborating on detail, especially if it's about things I know - I don't want to be a twit and try and be a know it all, for instance, you'd know MUCH more about the snow and Ice than I would becuase I've only been in snow 3 times in my life.. =D ,
Rubbin - It'd be my pleasure to do one, I'll do it and link you guys to the photobucket upload.
Nice work Helix, "Glare" seems to be the key word to me.
I am wondering about the highlight on the right side,
and why there seems so little light reflected on the craft.
This way it looks really alien,
like it is sucking up the light instead of reflecting it,
like it has some kind of anti-matter coating.
Well, enough of us,
I'd like to see what Rubbin has done with all these comments.
Thanks again, I got some good ideas from both your inputs. Some of the stuff that seems to come easy for you guys is still a little hard for me to master, but I'll get there (or somewhere). Give me a day or 2 and I'll show what I've done.
Aaah, I think I might of over highlighted that side.. ?
I wanted to do a water/webbing effect on the ships skin to make it look like dark energy,
like you said "sucking up the light' - but i figured it would change the image too much, I already changed the foot of the Bush Man dude.! =D
It's a pleasure Rubbin, but hey, remember, the only thing that sets artists apart is practice and effort! ^^.! =)
I'd love to see it, drop us the link or something so we can perv your desert!
