Brush and Ink, 1 hour for research, layout and sketching. Then about 4 hour for the ink, I had to take a break when got pain in my neck after 3 hours.
After some idea's I thought to follow the story I started with the port, hope you like it.
STORY
I think this has quite some potential to become a interesting story,
I explored it a bit with the following questions:
*What is the giant dugong attacking, the native people or the colonial occupiers?
*What have these people done to get attacked?
*Will the big turtles get crushed under the dugong?
*Is it a good dugong or a evil dugong?
*Is the port under attack, or are the ocean animals fleeing from something worse?
*Is the dugong trying to reach the people of the port community, to bring them a message?
*Is the dugong trying to find a chosen hero from between the people to help him solve a oceanic mystery?
*Where are all the pirates?
*What does the mark on it's belly mean?
*Is the dugong gonna fly over the port?
I got some more Idea's, I think I'll leave it open for a while and see where I can take it with the topics of the days to come.
Still a lot of comics are drawn with brush and ink, so I wanted to practice a bit more. I made this one on watercolor paper.
When I deceided to follow with the previous page, I deceided that a really huge sea creature should come and "demolish" the port fortress.
After thinking a bit, I deceided to go with a dugong. They look a certain grace and majesty on them to make them look like the lord of the ocean.
All the smaller panels are there to carry the sory through or build up anticipation for the big final panel.
I could have flipped the 1st and the 5th (with the fisherman) panels, that would be nicer for the flow.
(Dugong flows right to left, people and cannons flow left to right, so you get hem in opposite directions)
By not shading the dugong in the last panel it pops out much better, even while I did shade it in the 2nd and 4th panel.
The marking on the dugongs belly kinda came out looking like something with wings, which enhances the jump of the dugong very nicely, there is a feeling of flight.
Amazing use of inkbrush thats great to see I been trying to do similar things but can never get together a whole/single piece without doodles, mistakes hotrocks etc WELLDONE
Thanks man, don't look too hard on what you cannot do, rather look at what you have not done. I am a skill driven person, and have a tendency to strive for mastering/perfecting skills. Yes, talent and skill are great to have, but don't underestimate what you can learn by training, study, practice and dedication. I fear the last one is getting out of fashion in these times. Note that I spent one hour on research, layout and sketching alone, that is how much time is spent on an everage sketch on this site, and often less. And then I spent four hours inking.
Man I sound like an ancient arts teacher. Yeh little boogers, in my days, when I felt young and was your age, when apples came from appletrees and Mac's came from Scotland, eeeh.... those were days. And we were so poor that we had only newspapers to draw on and cardboard boxes.... and Chrismas wrappings we had to color them ourselves too yeh know.
