Hey,

I made this thread for general art technique related questions. The 'Improve yourself' thread seems to be more for links to external tutorials, software etc.

Here's my first question:

I've been reading a book with a chapter that deals with color theory (the book is not digital art specific). The book makes references to four parameters of color:- Hue, saturation, value and temperature.

The temperature they refer to is not the normal warm colors vs. cool color thing. The specifically talk about warm reds and cold reds for instance. From somewhere else I learned that a warm color has some (6%) yellow mixed into it and a cold color has blue mixed into it (again, relating to traditional paint mixing).

No I was wondering, how do you get warm and cold colors in PS for instance, is it as simple as going over your color with a low opacity blue/yellow? I don't see how you can pick a color in PS by 'temperature'.

It's mostly experimentation,
but having experience with traditional art is essential for good colour and tone in a scene, that's why I lack so much when it comes to colours.
warm vs. cool colours are easy to find, open your swatches pallet, and set your colour bar to HSB not RGB, then you can easily 'find' the colour, also, working in pantones is a quick way of getting that right feel or getting lush colours, have a look through the native photoshop pallets, and you might find one that suits your style and colour taste, some are overly elaborate, and others are very minimal.

I know this is for DSG, but here's a link to a swatch/pallet download that might be handy! =)

Hope it helps. =)

I know you weren't necessarily looking for links, but this tutorial page is extremely straight forward, it has really simple examples, and answers exactly what you were wondering about temperatures, i used to use it almost on a daily basis

Thanks guys! I'll following up on these leads.

I don't mind the links at all, I actually meant that this could be more directed towards specific issues than just general links like in the other thread. The links are good.

Like Helix I use the HSB slider rather than the RGB. Good that you ask questions, you got something helpfull thus far. It seems to me that you are trying to control something that is called temperature, that is what I'm guessing. Even Newtons color wheel from 1666 is still debatedat at some points. If some theory doesnt work for you and confuses you, you can either try conquering it harder or find something that works for you. Art is a big jumble and you cut out your own path.
One way would be asking questions, your going good and should keep it up. (It got me looking into it a bit too). Another thing is just to get at it with your colors, try out different things with colds and warms. Imagine what you think they should be, deceide to do some of the DSG topics using either, then ask feedback. We'd be happy to help you. Some people learn from a book and others from doinf or looking or listening. If your stuck with one, you can try another. Again, some people can help you well with theories (like all the nice links you get) or tools (like the swatches from Helix) or experience or visual examples. And I am helping you with... ummm... making you think?

I for one would love to see Ben ,or one or you guys that's good at it, do a tutorial on hard brush techniques and dynamic (dramatic) lighting. I really lack in these areas and study your drawings regularly

That sound really good man, I think that would be sweet, Snips could do panelling for us and line work, Ben could do the conceptual art and on..

That'd mean another slot up top called [TUTS] YAY! =)
